The Scoop's Burger-Off:
SmashBurger vs. The Nook By the Aerobic Newspaper Class Summer dinners are often grilled burgers. But we noticed in the Aerobic Newspaper neighborhood, that a lot of people go to nice burger joints for a quick summer lunch, either eat-in or to-go. Two places we investigated were The Nook and Smashburger. They are quite different, but both really good. The Nook has really flavorful ground beef with nice, gooey American cheese and a soft bun. We bought just a few and cut them into fractions so we all had a taste at a playground picnic. Our whole class loved it. The Smashburger ground beef is also delicious, but comes with a "secret" Smash sauce. About half the class thought it was great, and the others didn't. But the basic Smashburger comes with onion, lettuce, tomato and pickle, too, so it was hard to compare it to our basic Nook meat and bun version. Not that many kids like onions. Plus, the Smashburger had a fancier bun. We think that bun is kind of designed for adults--it's not so soft--but not so much that kids won't love it too! The French fries at Smashburger were very good. We tried four kinds, and there were two kinds that stood out the most: the sweet potato fries and the rosemary fries. The plain fries and the chili cheese fries really weren't that popular with us. The rosemary fries were seasoned with the herbs, but not too heavily. The fries were crisp and not too long, so you could fit them in your mouth easily--always a nice feature of a food! Some kids in the class liked The Nook fries the best: skin on, and soft. We really liked our taste tests. Both times we walked to the restaurants, ordered just a few burgers and split them into bites for the whole class. Both restaurants were really nice about cutting the burgers for us. |

Sodas With The Jerks
By Aly Another thing we did was compare burgers from The Nook and Smashburger. Lynden's was right next to The Nook so after eating a good hamburger you can have ice cream or a malt. Lynden's sells malts, ice cream, sodas, and candy. It's based on a 50's soda shop idea - the clerks even have the word "Jerk" sewn on their uniform shirts as if it is their name! They laughed when we asked him why their parents named them all Jerk. Really why that word is there is to recall the era of the '50s, when this kind of soda fountain job was popular and the workers were called "jerks" after the motion of pulling handles down to operate the soda dispenser - the handles were jerked down. Lynden's has these kid of dispensers, and also the bar stools and a marble-topped counter that you can sit at. They also have old soda flavors such as a Lime Rickey. |
Take A Walk To The Wok - You Won't Be Sorry!
By David and Thomas
Have you ever been to a Chinese buffet? You probably have, but have you been to one as good as The Cleveland Wok? Probably not. The Cleveland Wok is great for families because it has the option of buffet or a menu. It also has a very casual atmosphere. If you are in a rush, take out is available, but the option of eating at a booth or table is also available. The buffet is delicious, so many people prefer to dive into that instead of the menu. Although, if you do choose to order from the menu, the service is also very quick. We have seen people getting food in 5-10 minutes. The buffet has at least 15 different dishes ranging from many different kinds of chicken to noodles to regular and fried rice. They also include vegetarian dishes and their vegetables are deliciously steamed. The chefs bring out the dishes often to keep the food fresh as everything is easily devoured.
The Cleveland Wok has an ideal location, it is next to over 10 restaurants, a movie theater, book stores and much more. There is a frozen yogurt store across the street, but with The Wok's great dessert, who needs it? The Cleveland Wok tops it all off with great prices and vast amounts of food. The Cleveland Wok really is the king of Chinese buffets.
